In a candid chat with veteran film journalist Komal Nahta, Saiyaara writer Sankalp Sadanah opened up about the challenges of writing the film’s climax—and the surprising role artificial intelligence briefly played in the process.

The romantic drama Saiyaara, which has broken records at the box office, underwent multiple rounds of script and screenplay development before finding its emotional core. While the rest of the screenplay was locked early on, Sadanah revealed that the climax was the only piece that remained unresolved for a long time. “We had written the entire story and the screenplay. We had also done several revisions with Mohit [Suri]. But the climax hadn’t been cracked yet. We thought we’d figure it out together,” Sankalp said.
At that point, Sankalp was being assisted by Chetan Naidu during the writing process. It was during one of their brainstorming sessions that the idea of turning to artificial intelligence popped up—half in jest. “Chetan, just for fun—not seriously—asked ChatGPT: ‘How would Mohit Suri end such a movie?’” Sankalp recalled. “And it responded with: ‘The hero and heroine should both die.’”
While the suggestion was amusing, it wasn’t entirely off-base. “Given Mohit sir’s track record, it wasn’t that far-fetched. Mohit was also leaning toward a tragic ending because of the female lead’s condition,” Sankalp added, referring to the film’s central plotline, which follows a young woman diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s.
Ultimately, though, the film’s resolution came to Sankalp in a moment of unexpected inspiration. “One day, I was driving from Andheri to Mohit’s office in Bandra, and I got stuck in traffic in Juhu. And that’s when it just came to me.”
