Actor Prateik Babbar has opened up about a deeply personal revelation — that veteran artiste Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar had once considered adopting him after the untimely death of his mother, legendary actress Smita Patil. Speaking in an interview with Zoom, Prateik reflected on the many things he continues to discover about his early life.

“I recently found out Shabana ji and Javed sahab wanted to adopt me after my mother passed away,” Prateik shared. “It was kind of complicated. I could’ve been Farhan’s stepbrother. I find these new things about me all the time. Aur kya hai, batao (What else is there, tell me). It’s also very overwhelming. Ye hota toh main pata nahi kaisi zindagi jee raha hota (If this had happened, I don’t know what kind of life I’d be leading now).”
Prateik, son of Smita Patil and actor-politician Raj Babbar, was born in 1986. Tragically, Smita passed away shortly after his birth due to childbirth-related complications. At the time, Raj Babbar was still married to his first wife, Nadira Babbar, but had left her to marry Smita. Following her death, Prateik was raised by Smita’s parents.
The actor revealed that he has heard multiple stories about his early years, many of which he is only now learning. “There are many things I hear about myself as a child. There was a custody fight for me in my childhood. I was so little, just crying, I had no idea what was happening with me. People wanted to adopt me,” he said.
Despite the upheaval of his childhood, Prateik expressed gratitude for the affection he continues to receive because of his mother’s legacy. “I’m very grateful for all the love she gets, and all the goodwill she has in the industry, among all her colleagues and friends,” he said. “Shabana ji was definitely one of them, along with Javed sahab. Amit ji (Amitabh Bachchan) has always been very kind and supportive. I think everybody from her time, everybody she shared the screen with — Naseer sahab (Naseeruddin Shah), Ratna ji (Ratna Pathak Shah), the late great Shyam Benegal obviously — they’ve all been kind.”
In a candid moment during the interview, Prateik also shared another intimate detail: “I recently found out about myself — I was conceived on the sets of Mirch Masala (1987).”
Now 38, Prateik has often spoken about navigating life under the shadow of his famous mother.
