Regena Cassandrra has had a significant 2025. After featuring in Ajith-starrer Vidaamuyarchi, she was seen back-to-back in two Hindi films, Jaat and Kesari Chapter 2. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the talented actress spoke about this aspect and a lot more.

EXCLUSIVE: Regena Cassandrra reveals Akshay Kumar’s early morning ritual during Kesari Chapter 2: “We heard music from the pool!”; explains why she turned down Saiyami Kher’s role in Sunny Deol-starrer Jaat and chose to play the SHOCKINGLY dark role

You had just one release in 2024 (Utsavam), but this year, you have had 3 releases, two of which came back-to-back. How was it going through the reviews and response, especially for Jaat and Kesari Chapter 2?
It was heartening but also quite crazy! Jaat had the South stamp, while in Kesari Chapter 2, I play a South Indian character. So, there was a good balance of South and North in my films, which is my favourite thing. I am a proper South Indian by soul. Hence, to see that balance happening and also being the person executing it is nice. It doesn’t happen often. Moreover, I have been in the industry for 20 years. There’s still stuff that makes me feel excited and I am grateful for it. Also, all three roles were so varied. The character I played in Vidaamuyarchi, Deepika, is different to what I played in Jaat and Kesari Chapter 2. That made it even more fun

As you rightfully mentioned – in 2024, nothing much came out from my side and then I had three films within a span of two months. So, there’s always an ebb and flow. There’s noise and then there’s silence. This is what my industry has taught me – that it’s a process and to trust the process.

People have unanimously liked you in Jaat, especially the way you have expressed through your eyes…
(Laughs) Honestly, I didn’t expect that. After all, my role was not as big as the ones I have played in my other films. But it really made me feel nice as an actor that my screen presence registered.

You have played negative characters before but the one in Jaat stood out. Your character allows the rape of the female cops. When you read your part, were you apprehensive about how people would react to it?
I wasn’t apprehensive. In fact, not a lot of people know this but when the director narrated the story to me, he wanted me to play the role of the police officer (played by Saiyami Kher). I have played a cop a couple of times. I know what it is to essay a positive character, and I wanted to do something different. This is when I asked him if I could play the role of Bharathi. This was 2 years ago, when the film had not reached the scale that it eventually did. When he narrated the scene when Bharathi slaps the cop, that’s when I felt that it would be appealing to be on the other side. I realized that I’ll be able to do more justice.

How was it working with Sunny Deol?
We didn’t have much to talk about on the sets as we were together in just one scene, which is the interval block. But I liked that he was quite welcoming. All of us would sit together and have random conversations between shots. In setups like this, I was more of a listener. I am not much of a talker. Everyone is talking; someone has to be listening (smiles).

You also worked with one more star of Bollywood, Akshay Kumar, in Kesari Chapter 2. He’s known to be punctual and an early morning riser. Did you get to experience that side of him?

Yes, when we were shooting in Dehradun. We would be hearing his music in the morning when he would be working out in the pool! He would make sure he was on set on time. He likes to have fun on the sets. He is the prankster that everyone claims him to be. He made the set very lively. He would rarely go and sit in his van.

Did he play any pranks on you?
Yes, small ones. Nothing really big!

A lot of people remarked that they wished to see you more in Kesari Chapter 2
That was the only feedback I got (laughs)!

    That’s a great thing, right?
Oh yes. That is the biggest compliment that I can get. It happens even for my South films, including my recent film Vidaamuyarchi. I feel grateful that the audience wants to see more of me.

Hair designer Darshan Yewalekar, in an interview, said that designing your hairdo proved the most challenging in Kesari Chapter 2
Darshan and the stylist Sheetal worked very hard on the look. It was just not my hair; we wanted long hair and hence, we had five extensions in my head. This is because Malayali women have long, thick hair. They also worked hard in getting the right wave to the hair to make me look Malayali enough. It was a task, but it was a nice challenge. The whole team came together so well. My make-up artist is a North Indian and yet, he worked hard to figure out the Malayali look. He gave me the right kind of subtle make-up and made sure I looked good. All of it paid off.
