The Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday alleged that a group of Muslim girls physically attacked Hindu women after they refused to chant “Allah Hu Akbar.” The BJP made the allegation through a post on its official X handle.
According to the post, the incident took place in Dhakuria Lake in Kolkata. The post further claimed that when the Hindu women told the group, “This is a public place, not a religious one. You can’t force us, we are Hindus.”
The BJP claims the women were then assaulted for refusing to follow the demand and standing their ground. “Is this what religious harmony looks like in West Bengal? Are we in Bangladesh or Pakistan already?” BJP questioned in the post.
Responding to the alleged incident, IPS Meeraj Khalid, Joint Commissioner (Headquarters) of Kolkata Police, told India Today that the police came to know of the incident through social media and no official complaint has been filed at any police station so far.
“We have received information about this alleged incident from social media. No one has lodged any complaints at any police station so far. A detailed enquiry is being conducted to reveal the truth,” IPS Meeraj Khalid told India Today.
Meanwhile, a Kolkata Police source told India Today that efforts are being made to identify the complainant through available sources, adding that, since no written complaint has been submitted, the process is taking time.
Once she is identified, she will be called for questioning and if the incident is confirmed, a formal case will be registered, the source added.
