Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle jeans ads have caught the public’s eye — but it’s her newly revealed Republican voter registration that’s adding fuel to the fire. US President Donald Trump also weighed in, praising the actress’s ad after learning about her party affiliation.
Actress Sydney Sweeney, best known for her roles in Euphoria and White Lotus, is a registered Republican voter in Florida, according to The Guardian. She registered on June 14, 2024, just a few months before the November presidential election, when President Donald Trump returned to the White House.
Speaking on Sunday, Trump said, “If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic!”
This comes amid a swirl of controversy around Sweeney’s new denim ad campaign with American Eagle, which plays on the pun “Sydney Sweeney has great genes,” a phrase that sparked backlash.
Sweeney’s Republican voter registration has come to light following a period of scrutiny over her political views. In 2022, photos emerged showing the actress at a family birthday party where some guests wore “Make America Great Again” hats, which sparked backlash.
In response, Sweeney took to social media to urge people to “stop making assumptions,” clarifying that the gathering was “an innocent celebration” and not intended as a political statement.
TRUMP BACKS SYDNEY SWEENEY’S CAMPAIGN
US President Donald Trump weighed in on Sunday when a reporter mentioned Sweeney’s Republican affiliation. “You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans … I’m glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic!” Trump said.
His comments came as the public debated the meaning and implications of Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign, which cleverly juxtaposes the word “genes” with “jeans.” The videos feature the actress wearing denim apparel while delivering lines about genetics and body traits, interspersed with tongue-in-cheek moments.
Internet users dismissed the campaign as tone-deaf, alleging that its use of the word “genes” alluded to problematic ideas linked to eugenics and white supremacy.
American Eagle, the clothing company behind the campaign, issued a statement last Friday explaining the ad’s intent. “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,” the company said.
According to reports, American Eagle’s stock price has risen since the launch of the campaign, indicating a positive commercial response despite the controversies.
This contrasts sharply with the fallout from a 2023 Bud Light advertisement featuring trans activist Dylan Mulvaney, which led to a boycott and significant sales declines. Bud Light’s parent company later distanced itself from the campaign, blaming an outside agency.
