A woman was injured after her house was allegedly set on fire in Punjab’s Jalandhar by a vegetable vendor who was reportedly upset after she refused to marry him, police said on Saturday.
The woman, identified as Sukhwinder Kaur, was at home with her two children when the fire broke out. All three sustained burn injuries and were rushed to the civil hospital, where doctors referred the woman to another facility due to her critical condition.
The incident occurred in Ekta Nagar, Rama Mandi Phase-2. The woman’s family said she was living in a rented house. The victim’s mother said the man had been pressuring her daughter to marry him and acted after being rejected.
According to family members, the man regularly delivered vegetables to the house and had proposed marriage to the woman, which she rejected. During a heated argument, the woman slapped him, which reportedly angered him. He then returned later carrying a petrol bottle, climbed over the boundary wall and set the house on fire before fleeing the scene.
Sub-Inspector Ajmer Lal confirmed receiving a call from the hospital about the incident. He said the matter falls under Rama Mandi police station limits and the local police have been informed.
The Station House Officer (SHO) of Rama Mandi police station informed India Today that the matter is under their notice and further details will be shared soon.
