Shah Rukh Khan is one of the most talented actors in Bollywood, whose acting skills never fail to impress us. He has been in the industry for three decades and always has sent people into a collective meltdown with his acting mettle and King-like aura. The actor has gifted us several movies throughout all these years. In 2023, SRK left us in awe with his powerful acting skills in the movie, Jawan.
After 33 years in the industry, he received his first National award for the film, Jawan. Amidst the excitement of his fans, colleagues, and family members, let’s travel back to the time when King Khan said he deserved a national award for his film, Swades, not Saif Ali Khan for Hum Tum.
Shah Rukh Khan once said he deserved a National Award for Swades, not Saif Ali Khan for Hum Tum
Recently, a video resurfaced from a 2005 event, which was organised by Tag Heuer. In the video, SRK was seen on the stage with Kunal Kohli and anchor Mandira Bedi. On stage, the actor answered a question from Kunal, stating that he is a good-hearted person. SRK shared that he loves all of the films, heroes, and heroines. Shah Rukh mentioned that he is a simple-minded person. Stating that he also likes Kunal’s films as well, Shah Rukh said:
“See, main dil ka bahut acha hoon. Saari filmein achi lagti hain, saare hero ache lagte hain, saari heroine achi lagti hain, har cheez achi lagti hai. I am a simple-minded person; I like everything, including your films. I have loved them all.”
Going forward in his conversation, Shah Rukh revealed that Kunal’s film, Fanaa, was actually really good, along with Hum Tum. Shah Rukh further humourously added that Kunal’s actor, Saif Ali Khan, got the National Award for Hum Tum, which he should have gotten. Shah Rukh broke into laughter before saying:
“Fanaa was very good. I think Hum Tum was very nice. His actor won the National Award for Hum Tum when I think I should have got it, but that’s another story.”
Netizens’ reaction to the video
As soon as the video went viral, netizens rushed to the comment section to share their opinions. While some of the internet users agreed on the fact that SRK actually deserved to win an award, others mentioned how Swades was claimed to be plagiarised.

One user commented, “Unfortunately for him, TS Nagabharana was on the jury that year and openly questioned the integrity of Swades, even claiming it plagiarised his own film.” Another user wrote, “Agreed here, I can’t fathom how even Hum Tum was considered for Saif to get the award. I’ve watched Hum Tum and I like it, but did I believe it was what made Saif National Award worthy? No, absolutely not.”
Shah Rukh Khan won the 71st National Award for his film, Jawan
At the 71st National Award, Shah Rukh Khan and Vikran Massey got the award for Best Actor for their respective films, Jawan and 12th Fail. On Friday, August 1, 2025, SRK took to his IG handle and shared a video message, wherein he expressed his happiness over winning the National Award.
Shah Rukh Khan said that this win isn’t about achievements, but it’s a reminder that what he does matters. The actor stated that such wins and support mainly push him to work hard, keep going, and continue serving the cinema. In the post, SRK stated that this win isn’t a finish line, but it’s a fuel to continue striving, learning and giving back. SRK also mentioned that he could understand that acting isn’t just a job but a responsibility to portray the truth on screen.
