Born from a fusion of Dominica’s folk music and computerized instrumentation, bouyon has become one of the most bugged-out genres in the West Indies. Me being me, I prefer the side of the scene—currently the hottest music on its birth island and in Guadeloupe—that’s taken on the raunchiness of modern soca and dancehall. I’m talking Ridge’s “She Wan That Ah,” where over a nutty flip of Lil Uzi’s “Just Wanna Rock,” he sounds so thirsty to “dive in your pussy” that his head is probably going to explode like in Scanners. Or the uptempo group cut “1 Er FEU,” in which Miimii, my personal favorite, smoothly slides onto the track (right after a guy in the video pretends to wag his dick) with the opening line, “He wants to lick this pussy, I think he wan’ a baby.”
Even better is her new song “Sé Miimii,” a titanic dance track produced by DJ Skycee that cranks up bouyon’s signature rapid, syncopated percussion to the digital max. Miimii’s speak-sing flits between flirty chants, conversational brags, and sweet demands: “Give me di respect on di pussy, yeah,” she goes, as the tambourines rattle. Particularly cool is the dance breakdown that features a cyberkinetic keyboard rhythm so out of this world that I’m expecting it to spark whines at future carnivals that become folklore like the twerks of Freaknik.
