A 78-year-old man in Buenos Aires shot and killed a 15-year-old boy last Monday night who attempted to rob him outside his home.
The incident’s surveillance footage has since gone viral.
The viral video shows the teenager and two accomplices arriving in a van next to the elderly man as he was about to exit his white Toyota Hilux. Before the vehicle came to a complete stop, the teen jumped out, pointing what appeared to be a handgun at the retiree.
As the teenager tried to open the driver’s side door, the 78-year-old quickly drew his licensed .357 Magnum pistol and fired, striking the boy in the skull and chest, according to police.
The suspect immediately collapsed, and the van sped away as the elderly man fired another shot at the boy on the ground. He then exited his car and fired two more shots at the fleeing van before turning back, the footage revealed.
Authorities later confirmed that the 15-year-old had been carrying a fake gun resembling a .22-caliber Bersa Thunder, New York Post noted, citing local outlet Page 12.
Despite efforts to track them down, the other two suspects inside the van remain at large.
Local Prosecutor Diego Rulli stated that no charges would be filed against the retiree, determining that he acted in clear self-defence using a legally owned firearm.
The incident has sparked debate in Buenos Aires, as it was the second fatal shooting of a minor during an attempted robbery in January. In the earlier case, another teenager was killed after trying to steal a motorcycle in La Tablada.
Authorities continue investigating the suspected gang connections of the teen and his accomplices.
