American singer, Justin Timberlake recently announced that he was fighting Lyme disease. It was during his Forget Tomorrow wrap-up tour that the singer revealed his illness. He shared that it has been relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically. It was on July 30, 2025, that Justin wrapped up his Forget Tomorrow world tour and revealed being diagnosed with Lyme disease. He had penned an emotional post on his Instagram feed where he reflected on his 30-year-long career, the struggling times, how he prepared for the tour and spoke on his unheard health issue- the Lyme disease.
What is Lyme disease exactly that Justin Timberlake spoke about?
Justin, in his long Instagram note, shared that if one has been living with Lyme disease, then it can take a toll on mental health. He shared that when he was first diagnosed, he did not understand how, on stage, he would get nerve pain with fatigue, sickness. Now, according to a report by the Hindustan Times, Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection that is caused by a bacterium known as Borrelia burgdorferi. The disease has been named after the town of Lyme, Connecticut, where it was first diagnosed in children back in 1976. It affects the skin, nervous system, heart and joints.
Justin was almost on the verge of cancelling the tour, but his love for performance made him bear the pain of Lyme disease. Justin, who is a private person, in his post, did mention that when he was first diagnosed, he considered not continuing with the tour. A part of his note read:
“But I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighed the fleeting stress my body was feeling. I’m so glad I kept going. I honestly don’t know what my future is onstage but I’ll always cherish this run! And all of them before! It’s been the stuff of legend for me.”
What are the symptoms of Lyme disease that Justin Timberlake has been diagnosed with?
Lyme disease is transmitted to humans via the bite of black legged ticks, also known as deer ticks. They carry the Borrelia bacteria, and these ticks are actually found in wooded or grassy areas. They can latch on to animals as well as humans, and the bacteria are transmitted during the feeding process. The symptoms of Lyme disease can vary depending on the stage of the infection. It can make it pretty challenging to diagnose the disease, and the report by HT mentions that the disease progresses in 3 stages.
First is the early localised stage, where the disease occurs between 3 and 32 days post a tick bite. The early symptoms of the same may include a pain-filled, red rash in a circular pattern with a centre. It expands over time, revealing a bull’s-eye pattern, and occurs in the thigh, groin, and upper arm, specifically in the thoracic area known as the axilla. The symptoms of the same start from fever, rash, extreme headache, chills, stiffness in the neck, a lot of weakness, muscle and joint pain, large lymph nodes and cough.
The recovery from Lyme Disease takes time
If Lyme disease is not treated, it can lead to extremely long-term symptoms such as memory, sleep disorders, and extreme nerve pain called peripheral neuropathy. Apart from flu-like issues, most neurological complications can be treated with antibiotics. However, the recovery process is slow, and it becomes even slower if the diagnosis is not made in the earlier stages. If Lyme disease is untreated, it can also lead to extreme arthritis and affect the heart.
The lingering symptoms of Lyme disease do not go away even when the treatment is well done. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s insurance records have shown that around 476,000 people are being treated for Lyme Disease yearly in America. However, Justin seems to be on a road to recovery, as in his post, in the end, he did mention that for him, nothing is more important than the unconditional love he has been getting from his audiences.
