After a career spanning two decades and a slew of powerful performances, Vidya Balan is entering a new phase—one that prioritizes freshness, fun, and light-hearted storytelling. In a recent conversation with Peacock Magazine, the National Award-winning actor opened up about what “good roles” mean to her today, 20 years into her journey in the film industry.

Vidya shared, “For me today, a ‘good role’ is something I haven’t done before—something fresh, something that feels new to me. At this point, I just want to have fun with the films I do.”
Known for her intense, female-led narratives and roles that pushed boundaries, the actress now finds herself seeking projects that bring joy—not just to the audience but to her as well. She added, “I keep telling people, ‘I want to do a comedy! Something light-hearted, something goofy!’ I genuinely want to entertain.”
Vidya acknowledged the richness of her past filmography but emphasized that she’s craving a different energy now. “Over the past two decades, I’ve done all kinds of roles and stories, and I’m deeply grateful for that. But the phase I’m in right now—I want to do roles and films that I’ve not done before. Even if it’s a female-led film, I want to approach it with a sense of fun.”
As a viewer too, her preferences have shifted. “I don’t enjoy watching anything that feels too heavy or intense or makes me think too much. So yes—Priyadarshan, Anees Bazmee… more of that energy.”
With her focus now on comedy and lighter narratives, fans may soon see a whole new side of Vidya Balan on screen.
