NEW DELHI: BJP MP and actor Ravi Kishan on Thursday raised a unique but pressing issue in the Lok Sabha, calling for government regulation of food prices, quantity, and quality at eateries across the country.Invoking the relatable example of varying prices and sizes of samosas across regions, he said, “Somewhere you get a samosa at one rate in a dhaba, while it is served at a much higher price in a five-star hotel. Sometimes it’s small, sometimes large — I still haven’t figured it out.”Speaking during Zero Hour, the Gorakhpur MP highlighted that India, as the world’s most populous country, sees crores of people eating daily at roadside dhabas, small-town hotels, and metropolitan restaurants. However, there is no uniformity in how food is priced or portioned.“You get dal tadka at some outlets for Rs 100, while at others it is Rs 120, and in a hotel it is Rs 1,000. Four people go to eat but don’t know how much they’ll actually get for that price. This massive market operates without regulation,” he said.Ravi Kishan pointed out that while transformative reforms have been introduced across sectors under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, this particular area has not yet received attention.“I urge the government to create a law that sets clear rules for the price, quality, and quantity of food served at dhabas, regular hotels, restaurants and five-star hotels so that the public gets fair value,” he said.He further suggested that just like packaged food items list weight or number of pieces, eateries should be mandated to specify the portion size of food items on menus to avoid customer confusion.
