With just days to go until its release on August 1, 2025, Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardaar 2 is gearing up to bring back high-octane comedy and larger-than-life characters to the big screen. As the sixth major Bollywood release of the season, the film is drawing attention not just for its familiar title and star power, but also for its confident stance amidst a competitive box office window — sandwiched between the blockbuster Saiyaara and the hotly anticipated War 2.
Ajay Devgn starrer Son of Sardaar 2 could surprise box office, says Trade Expert
Despite the crowded calendar, industry watchers are keeping a close eye on Son of Sardaar 2, with optimism riding high on Devgn’s comedic chops and the brand value of the original 2012 hit. Trade analyst Atul Mohan shares a measured but positive outlook. “It’s not necessary that Son Of Sardaar 2 may get sandwiched between Saiyaara and War 2,” says Mohan. “Nobody can stop a good film from doing well. If the content isn’t up to the mark, things will become a bit tricky. But it is made on this scale by Ajay Devgn, so there has to be something. The first part was a hit. The music has received a good enough response.”
Indeed, the promotional campaign — anchored by two vibrant, high-energy trailers — suggests that Son of Sardaar 2 leans unapologetically into slapstick comedy, a genre that has remained a crowd favourite across generations. While some have questioned whether the humour might feel outdated in 2025, Mohan points out that comedy is best judged in context, not in isolation.
“You can’t judge a film by just watching the trailer,” he notes. “Once you start a movie, you become a part of its journey and get involved. The punches might appear old, but in what situation they have been executed is to be seen in the film. As they say, you can’t judge a book by its cover. You can’t judge a film by its two-minute trailer unless you become a part of the film’s journey.”
One of the key points of discussion around Son of Sardaar 2 is its lead character — a bold, boisterous, and stereotypical sardar. While this archetype worked wonders over a decade ago, the question is whether it will resonate with today’s audience. Again, Mohan urges a more open-minded approach.
“It all depends on the content and packaging,” he explains. “If people enjoy the film, they will accept this too. For example, Saiyaara has done well. But we have seen films like Saiyaara in the past also. It’s just that today’s generation hasn’t seen such films. Hence, maybe Son of Sardaar 2 might prove to be new for this audience.”
With a new generation of filmgoers and a fresh comedic lens, Son of Sardaar 2 might just hit the right nostalgic and entertainment chords. Add to that Devgn’s impeccable timing and flair for physical comedy, and the film has every chance of carving out its space this weekend.
As Mohan aptly sums it up: “The audience changes every few years. What may seem familiar to one generation can feel fresh and exciting to another.”
In a season filled with intense drama, thrillers, and action-packed spectacles, Son of Sardaar 2 may just be the laughter-loaded break the audience didn’t know they needed.
