In a dramatic turn that has sparked chatter in the festival circuit, Anurag Kashyap has skipped Cannes to premiere his next film Bandar at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The decision reportedly aligns with TIFF’s 50th anniversary, as festival managers were keen for the film to debut during the milestone edition. The film features Bobby Deol, Sanya Malhotra, Saba Azad, and Sapna Pabbi, and is produced by Nikhil Dwivedi.

The unexpected switch has many calling it the latest chapter in the ongoing “Festival Wars,” a trend where global festivals compete to secure premiere rights for anticipated films. While Cannes has traditionally been known for auteur-driven cinema, TIFF’s expanding international presence and broader audience have made it a strategic option for filmmakers.
This shift also marks a new phase for Bobby Deol, who takes on a role described as raw and dark in Bandar, a departure from his previous work. Coming after Animal, the film presents him in a different light.
Bandar is being described as a drama featuring layered characters and grounded in a stark portrayal of reality, in line with Kashyap’s established storytelling approach. With its ensemble cast, the film is drawing early attention ahead of its premiere at TIFF 2025.
