Aamir Khan questions cinema’s limited reach: “Only 2 to 3% of India’s population watches films in theatres”

In today’s media interaction, Aamir Khan addressed a range of topics, including the evolving content preferences of audiences and the shifting habits of moviegoers. He reflected on how different age groups are gravitating towards varied genres and platforms, highlighting the importance of adapting storytelling to meet the changing demands of viewers.

Speaking about changing audience preferences, Aamir Khan shared his thoughts on the evolving landscape of content consumption across age groups. He said, “I think different generations will move towards different content based on what kind of content it is. I think younger audiences, for example, are loving Saiyaara, which is a big hit, so every age group has its own taste. As a creative person, I want to be able to make all kinds of films — for Gen Z, for the younger generation, and for others as well. I want to explore different topics. This gives me the freedom to do that.”

During the media interaction, Aamir Khan reflected on a critical issue that has shaped his approach to filmmaking and distribution over the years. He shared a moment of realization that occurred over a decade ago, shedding light on the limited theatrical reach of Indian cinema despite the country’s massive population.

Aamir said, “About 15 years ago, I came across a statistic that truly shocked and surprised me. It revealed that, in our country with a population of 140 crore, only around 3 to 3.5 crore people watch films in theatres—even the biggest box office hits. That means only about 2 to 3 percent of our population goes to the cinema. This realization struck me deeply. I began to ask myself: as a film industry, if we are only able to reach 2 or 3 percent of the population through theatrical releases, are we really thinking about how to connect with the remaining 97 to 98 percent? This is a huge segment of our population. How can we ensure that cinema reaches every individual in the country?”

Sitaare Zameen Par, which released on June 20, 2025, collected Rs. 164.02 crore at the Indian box office.
