Mereba‘s sophomore album is a love letter to the people and experiences that shaped her life. It can take the form of a song written for her newborn or a voice memo featuring wise wisdom from her father.

On a song like “Counterfeit,” she nods at the long journey through the music industry to get to this point. Mereba’s musical career has taken her from Greensboro, N.C., learning guitar and playing folk music, to becoming a part of Atlanta’s underground music scene in the 2010s.

Now based in LA, she was mentored by Stevie Wonder, and in 2019, Mereba released her debut album, The Jungle is the Only Way Out.

In this session, Mereba joins us to talk about making The Breeze Grew a Fire, how inspiration has to come a little quicker when you’re a new mother, and the time her dad made her connect with her ancestry in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This episode of World Cafe was produced and edited by Kimberly Junod. The web story was created by Miguel Perez. Our engineer is Chris Williams. Our programming and booking coordinator is Chelsea Johnson and our line producer is Will Loftus.
