Zohran Kwame Mamdani is an American politician of Indian descent. He has served as a member of the New York Assembly for almost four years and is now set to take the chair of mayor. The New York City candidate has built his name from the ground up, questioning everything he deemed wrong, and now he is on the run to make a difference in the city of dreams with his undeterred spirit. However, it was not his campaign that brought him into the limelight; it was his three-day wedding celebration that sparked a debate about his political ideals and personal lifestyle.
Zohran Mamdani faces severe criticism for his three-day wedding celebration
According to a report by the New York Post, the politician celebrated his wedding last week at his family’s private estate in Kampala, Uganda. Zohran Mamdani was celebrating the beginning of his marital life with his wife, artist and animator, Rama Duwaji. For the unversed, the couple had eloped earlier in 2025. However, this gathering has sparked significant backlash. The event included close friends and family and was held at the Mamdanis’ luxurious residence in Buziga Hill, one of the city’s most elite neighbourhoods.
The report also revealed that the event was heavily guarded. Witnesses shared that there were more than 20 marked security guards stationed across the property. However, what further caught the attendees’ attention was the fact that cellphone signals in the area were jammed. The event, which was strictly invitation-only and had at least one gate watched by nearly ten guards, has left the internet unsure about Zohran Mamdani’s policies.
Social media was outraged by the elite celebration
As soon as the news broke out, it worked against the politician. The tight security, combined with network jammers, has left the voters agitated because Zohran’s actions did not align with what he promised during his campaigns. The tight security and grand celebrations caught everyone’s attention, yet he used private guards for his own event. A user penned, “NYC Mayor candidate Zohran Mamdani has run on the platform of defunding the police and abolishing prisons, but this is his private security outside his family compound in Uganda. Don’t those who can’t afford private security also deserve to feel safe and protected?”

Another wrote, “Ask yourself, why would Zohran Mamdani need to use cell phone jammers and heavy security for guests at his party. Could it be that the Socialist candidate didn’t want to be outed as a wealthy hypocrite—living a life that he condemns for other New Yorkers?” Another wrote, “Three lavish weddings in NYC, Dubai & Uganda—while preaching socialism to struggling New Yorkers. It’s always the same with champagne socialists: lectures on equality by day, luxury with elites by night. Socialism for the poor, capitalism for the connected.”
Netizens get concerned about the timing of the celebration
Apart from the scale of the wedding, some locals in Uganda raised concerns around the timing of the celebration. For the uninitiated, the celebration coincided with the community’s mourning of the passing of retired Supreme Court Judge, George Kanyeihamba, who resided near the Mamdani estate, according to the New York Post. Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni had also visited the neighbourhood to pay his respects, and the road was reportedly ‘blocked’ during his arrival. A local addressed the same and stated:
“Because of the culture here, it was insensitive to have a wedding celebration in the same week as mourning – or ‘Okukungubaga’ – as it’s called here. People are still in mourning. He has not even been buried, and we have his friends coming to give last words and to mourn before the burial next week, yet Mamdani is celebrating his wedding for three days.”
