Cambodia is calling for a ceasefire with Thailand following cross-border fighting over territorial claims related to temples, which has resulted in 15 deaths and dozens of injuries. Over 130,000 Thai residents from border areas have been evacuated. Thailand has imposed martial law in eight border districts and downgraded diplomatic relations with Cambodia. The conflict has been escalated to the United Nations Security Council at the request of the Cambodian government. Accusations have been exchanged, with Thailand alleging Cambodia’s use of landmines and Cambodia claiming Thailand has used heavy artillery and fighter jets. A Thai leader warned the clashes “could very quickly escalate into a full-blown war.” India’s government has advised its citizens in Thailand to avoid the border regions, particularly near Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province.
