Starlink’s satellite internet service experienced an outage for many users around the world, prompting a flurry of online complaints — and a quick response from Elon Musk.

“We are currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing a solution,” Starlink said in a short update on X. “We appreciate your patience, we’ll share an update once this issue is resolved.”

The issue affected customers across multiple continents, with outage tracking sites showing spikes in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.

Musk responded on X, saying, “Service will be restored shortly. Sorry for the outage.”

He added that “SpaceX will remedy root cause to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”

While details were scarce, this appears to be one of the largest disruptions to Starlink’s growing satellite network, which currently beams internet to over 3 million users. No technical cause was shared, but Starlink’s language suggests a backend fault that SpaceX is now rushing to fix.

The service appeared to have experienced a “total outage” beginning around 3:13 p.m., according to Doug Madory, an expert at the internet analysis firm Kentik.

The outage is global and Starlink is not carrying any traffic right now, Madory told Reuters. He said such a sweeping interruption in service was unusual. “They haven’t had one like this in a long time.”
