A diarrhea outbreak in a village in Telangana’s Kamareddy district, has left two people dead and several others in hospital over the last three days. The illness is suspected to be caused by contaminated food or water.
Konninti Chinna and Bhoomayya from Kottabad Bazaar were hospitalised with vomiting and diarrhea. Although they returned home after treatment, one of them later died. The next day, Mettu Swamy (32) from Harijanwada also passed away with similar symptoms.
Seven more people are being treated at Kamareddy District Government Hospital. Two of them are in the ICU, and two others have been discharged.
District Medical and Health Officer Dr. Chandrasekhar visited the village and inspected the drainage system and house surroundings. He said the health department suspects the illness may have spread during the funeral of a man named Sayilu, who died 10 days ago after spraying pesticides. Many villagers had eaten meat and consumed alcohol during the rituals.
Dr. Chandrasekhar said mild diarrhea symptoms are still being reported. Fifteen people are being treated at a medical camp, and six serious cases have been shifted to the district hospital.
Officials have asked villagers to stop meat sales for a week as a safety measure.
