Saiyaara had a blockbuster weekend and refuses to slow down on the weekdays. We spoke to trade experts to understand what its lifetime collections would be – will it cross the Rs. 200 crore mark? Or will it enter the Rs. 300 crore club? Can it go beyond that?
Trade experts feel that Saiyaara might even collect Rs. 500 crores in its lifetime: “It is a GAME CHANGER. It goes against the rule book of how studios and corporates think. It’s great news for the film industry”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan remarked, “Anything can happen. Rs. 200 crore plus seems a possibility.”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “Right now, even Yash Raj won’t be able to calculate! The way this film is going, it is clear that the audience has become the cheerleader and ambassador for this film. It can go anywhere – Rs. 300 crores, Rs. 400 crores, Rs. 500 crores. Look at the videos on social media; it’s crazy and at the same time euphoric to see such reactions coming from different corners, because all this while, we have been thinking that log theatre mein aana nahin chahte. But people are celebrating this film inside the theatre. It’s a very, very positive sign for the industry.”
He continued, “We had Housefull 5 with Akshay Kumar, Raid 2 with Ajay Devgn, Sikandar with Salman Khan and Sitaare Zameen Par with Aamir Khan. Saiyaara, meanwhile, is trending much better than these films, that too on fewer screens. Right now, everyone in the industry is thinking, ‘We can get these results with good music and story and minimal promotions. The lead couple were kept under wraps. It is not the usual masala film. Hence, this film is a game-changer. It goes against the rule book of how studios and corporates think. It’s great news for the film industry.”
Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, added, “It can go anywhere, looking at the kind of hold that Monday is having. Right now, it’s the young generation that’s powering the film. The uncle-aunty crowd and mass audience haven’t come out in full force yet. And they will have to come out as this film has come under the ‘mandatory viewing’ category. The kind of number is doing and the kind of noise it is creating, people will eventually have to watch this film. That puts it in a unique position and at par with other debutant blockbusters like Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000), etc. in terms of box office.”
He remarked, “It has filled a vacuum. The sheer uniqueness of the film in a market which had completely forgotten this kind of cinema has worked. We hadn’t seen a youngster being introduced in a love story for a long time. Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai is the only film that we can go back to.”
He also said, “Logon ko nasha ho raha hai yeh film dekh ke! Hence, how much business it’ll do now, kuch nahin keh sakte. In fact, I won’t be surprised if it goes on to do Rs. 500 crores. When was the last time a newcomer film collected Rs. 35 crores on a Sunday? After a great opening, the only spoiler could have been word of mouth. Thankfully, the reports were extraordinary from classes to masses. Ab iss picture ko koi rok hi nahin sakta.”
Taran Adarsh further stated, “A lot of people told me, ‘Yeh toh sirf youth ko pasand aayegi. This is a film for 20- and 25-year-olds’. I told them, ‘I am a 60-year-old man. I was crying while watching this film!’. This film is not going to stop. It is going to continue for a very, very long time. Abhi toh sirf shuruaat hai. Picture abhi baaki hai!”
Vishek Chauhan signed off by saying, “It’s heartening that such kind of cinema is working. The theatrical pie is getting bigger. The audience’s base is growing. The whole industry should celebrate Saiyaara’s success.”
