A political conflict has erupted over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has called the exercise an “attack on democracy” and taken the protest to the state assembly. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stated she will not permit a similar revision in her state. In response, the Election Commission has filed a reply in the Supreme Court, stating that petitions against the move are based on “misleading, incorrect newspaper reports” and that every effort is being made to ensure no eligible elector is excluded. The EC has shared details with political parties of 29.6 lakh electors whose forms were not received and 43.9 lakh who were not found at their addresses. The final date for form submission in Bihar is July 25th, with a draft list to be published on August 1st.
