‘On Call’ Canceled: Will It Be Saved? What Would Have Happened in Season 2?

Dick Wolf knows how to make good TV. He’s more than proved that with three hit franchises dominating the primetime across broadcast networks (the FBIs on CBS, One Chicago and Law & Order on NBC and now Peacock). He added a half-hour police drama (on streaming!) to that in 2025. However, On Call will not be returning for a second season, it was revealed on Friday, May 9.

The Prime Video series, which dropped its first season all at once, features a different way of looking at the genre: through a mixture of bodycam, dash-camera, and cellphone footage. Read on for everything we know about its future, including what we could have seen in a second season.

    Has On Call been renewed?

Sadly, no. The series has been canceled, according to Deadline.

Ahead of the series’ launch, executive producer Tim Walsh had told TV Insider, “We’re hopeful that we’re going to get a Season 2.”

    Could On Call be saved?

It sounds like it’s a possibility! According to Deadline’s report, it’s being shopped around to have a second season released elsewhere, with Peacock a possibility. (That’s where Law & Order: Organized Crime now streams.)

Who’s in the On Call cast?

Season 1 stars Troian Bellisario as training officer Traci Harmon, Brandon Larracuente as her rookie Alex Diaz, Eriq La Salle (who also executive produces and directs) as Sergeant Lasman, Lori Loughlin as Lieutenant Bishop, and Rich Ting as Sergeant Koyama.

Did On Call Season 1 leave off on a cliffhanger?

Somewhat. It certainly “left some threads,” as Walsh told TV Insider. Both Loughlin and La Salle had also shared that there are “many, many stories to tell.”

Harmon was surprised to not get a position she’d been wanting on Koyoma’s drug team and to find out that the person who kept from getting it was Bishop, for going off book in her effort to get justice after Delgado’s (Monica Raymund) murder and putting her rookie’s life in danger.

Then, Harmon, after some of Diaz’s decisions during the first season, recommended he restart his probation. She requested he continue to ride with her.

What would’ve happened in On Call Season 2?

Executive producer Elliot Wolf stressed to TV Insider that despite Bishop’s betrayal of Harmon, the two “have a very deep respect for each other, as female officers in a male-dominated profession. Sometimes that doesn’t come across, but it’s there.” It was also something that would have been explored in a second season.

“The fentanyl trade that Smokey was involved in, that’s still out there hanging out there for us to take,” added Walsh. “And then just all really the character stuff, quite honestly, that we want to explore more deeply in Season 2. That’s really the focal point, is the two leads.”

Added Wolf, “We knew we wanted their dynamic to continue. We also put a lot of effort into making this show feel grounded in how a police department actually works. So from that standpoint, we talked with a bunch of folks and found a way to keep them together. And then the trick of doing that actually on the page when we wrote the episode was for it not to come across like that was our intention. It has to come across organically. The dynamic between these two is the heart of the show and that’s the real arc of the season.”

Bellisario told TV Insider she was looking forward to exploring that dynamic more as well. “What I’m very excited to continue to mine with Brandon and with his character of Diaz is, how much more can they be to each other? How much more can they learn from each other and how can they grow?” she asked. “It’s this really wonderful rocky road that they get to travel together of, I don’t want you to lose what makes you you, but we have to figure out the right and the wrong times in order to employ it.”

A second season was also set to explore Harmon and Lasman’s relationship more after the two started out the first season on opposite sides due to their history. But they’d reached an understanding by the end, especially once Harmon learned he was not the one who kept her from that new position.
