Police in Punjab’s Khanna have unravelled a major marriage fraud, busting a racket wherein a mother-daughter duo allegedly cheated several families by promising them marriage with a girl living in Canada.

The accused, identified as Sukhdarshan Kaur and her daughter Harpreet Kaur alias Harry, reportedly targeted young men and their families across Punjab, luring them with the prospect of settling abroad post-marriage.

According to police, the gang had duped at least seven families to the tune of crores of rupees. The victims were shown photos and videos of Harpreet, who lives in Canada, and were engaged via video calls.

These families were promised that the girl would return soon for the wedding, but once money changed hands, all contact would gradually fade.

The racket came to light when a WhatsApp message, sent by mistake, raised suspicions about one of the victims. Upon investigation, the fraud unravelled, revealing a well-planned scheme involving fake engagements and emotional manipulation.

Khanna Police have arrested the main accused, Sukhdarshan Kaur, her son Manpreet Singh, and an associate named Ashok Kumar. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to issue a lookout circular for Harpreet, currently based in Canada.

Officials said that more victims are expected to come forward as the case gains attention. Police are urging families to be cautious of such marriage-related offers and to verify details thoroughly before making any commitments.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities are also looking into whether more people were involved in the scam.
