Over 2,300 male passengers were penalised during the financial year 2024-25 for unlawfully entering coaches reserved for women, a DMRC official said.

According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), a total of 2,320 challans were issued under the Delhi Metro Railway Operation and Maintenance Act.

The highest number of cases were recorded in May at 443, followed by 419 in April and 397 in September, while only one offender was penalised in December 2024.

Under the Delhi Metro Railway Operation and Maintenance Act, each offender is liable to pay a penalty of Rs 250, it stated.

In cases where individuals are unable to pay the fine on the spot, CISF or flying squad personnel issue a warning and allow them to leave, he said.

A DMRC official said the drive is conducted in coordination with CISF personnel, who are deployed at various points across the metro network.

The corporation has also initiated a number of awareness measures to curb the issue. These include regular announcements in trains and on platforms, digital campaigns through DMRC’s social media channels, and clear signage indicating the location of women-only coaches, he said.

The official also added that flying squads are also assigned to monitor and take action against violators.

He said such drives and sensitisation efforts will continue in the days ahead to ensure a safer and more comfortable travel experience for female passengers.

The Delhi Metro currently operates a network of nearly 395 kilometres with 257 stations across 10 colour-coded lines.

Trains typically run in six or eight-coach formations, with one coach reserved for women.
