Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday reinforced his country’s resolve in the ongoing war in Gaza, vowing not to halt the military campaign amid efforts for a ceasefire.
Speaking at a press conference in Jerusalem, Netanyahu stated, “If we end the war now, Hamas will return, recover, rebuild and attack us again — and that is what we do not want to go back to.” His remarks came as the conflict entered its 14th month.
He highlighted the isolation of Hamas as a potential turning point, saying it “opens the door to a hostage deal.” However, he cautioned against premature optimism, noting, “It’s too early to say whether hostage deal efforts will succeed.”
As the Syrian leadership sees a dramatic change following the fall of Bashar al-Assad, Netanyahu acknowledged the shifting dynamics in the region.
Netanyahu further stated that Israel was “using all the tools it has to ensure its security” in light of the new Syrian regime.
Netanyahu also addressed the longstanding territorial issue of the Golan Heights, emphasising its permanence under Israeli control.
The territory, occupied by Israel for nearly six decades, was annexed in 1981, a move recently recognised by the United States during Donald Trump’s presidency.
“The Golan will be part of the State of Israel for eternity,” Netanyahu said, expressing gratitude to Trump for the recognition during his first term.
