Tombolo is venturing beyond the shore with its latest collaboration.

The New York-based brand has launched a new apparel collection in collaboration with heritage boat manufacturer Boston Whaler. The partnership features 23 pieces inspired by the boating community, including fishing shirts, board shorts and foul-weather gear — all crafted with fabrics from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, when Boston Whaler was gaining popularity among boaters worldwide.

“The inspiration is the purity of time spent on the water — salt drying on your skin after a refreshing swim, a baking sun overhead drying a towel hanging over the bow rail, water beading satisfyingly on the windshield and the steady thrum of an outboard as you return home at golden hour. There’s a visceral magic to boating that’s hard to put into words but easy to feel,” Michael Sard and Chris Galasso, founders of Tombolo, told WWD via statement.

Sard and Galasso have been inspired by Boston Whaler’s legacy since before founding Tombolo, making this collaboration “deeply personal.”

“Boston Whaler was a part of our childhood — part of how we fell in love with the water in the first place. So partnering with a brand we’ve admired since before we hit puberty is a full-circle moment,” they said. “It’s also a chance to show people that performance and playfulness don’t have to be mutually exclusive. We want to make fun clothes that resonate just as much on land as they do onboard.”

Boston Whaler was founded by Dick Fisher in 1958. The company became famous for its 13-foot The Unsinkable Legend boat, which Fisher sawed in half and motored around in the aft portion to prove his unsinkable claim to be true. The story was featured in a 1961 spread in Life Magazine, boosting the company into the national spotlight.

“This partnership represents a natural alignment between two brands that share a deep commitment to meaningful experiences, connection and self-discovery,” Lenn Scholz, president of Boston Whaler, told WWD. “For Boston Whaler, it’s about more than boats — it’s about empowering families to explore with confidence and create lasting memories on the water. For Tombolo, it’s about being the bridge to your happy place, outfitting every escape with comfort and style. Together, we’re not just offering a product — we’re offering a lifestyle rooted in freedom, joy and belonging.”

The partnership also marks another special moment for Boston Whaler. In 2024, Tombolo rescued one of Boston Whaler’s first 16-foot boats, released in 1961, from a yard on Shelter Island, N.Y. The boat, named Cea Pea, was restored in collaboration with Mercury Marine and is now featured in the photo shoot promoting the new collection.
