Any seasoned planner will tell you: if it matters, there’s probably a checklist involved. From meal prepping to career goals, ticking boxes just makes sense. So, when Benny Blanco decided it was time to get serious about love, he made a list.
The 37-year-old music producer, who is engaged to singer Selena Gomez, recently spilled the details on the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane, where he revealed that his journey to finding “the one” started with pen and paper.
“So then, I made a list,” he shared. “And I had all these things on my list. They’re simple, dumb things, (but) they’re just true. Like I needed someone, for me, (who was) age appropriate. And I was like, ‘30 and above, no one lower’. Like even if they’re a mature 28-year-old, none has to be 30.”
Once the practicalities were out of the way, Benny turned to what really mattered, the heart stuff. And here’s where things get surprisingly relatable. “Then I wanted someone who was kind. I know it’s so crazy, because it’s so hard to find. I wanted someone who was interested in something, like had their own thing. I don’t care if they like made carpets. I just wanted them to be interested and passionate about something in their life. Like working towards a goal,” he said, giving us all a bit of food for thought.
And then came the slightly more whimsical requirement: someone who wakes up happy.“I wake up and I’m happy,” he said. “Like I wake up happy. And I wanted someone who was like that too,” he said.
Benny shared that what prompted the romantic project plan was his looming sense of not wanting to become a textbook celebrit stereotype. “When I was like… 34,” he recalled. “I literally was sitting in my house, and I was like, ‘I can’t be like one of these celebrities that’s 40 or 50 and at the club. Like, that’s crazy!’ It was a mixture of that and, I’ve always wanted to find my person. I’ve always been like a relationship guy. I was sitting there and I was like, ‘I want my other half, I want to find an equal in someone that f*ing inspires the st out of me’”
Benny and Selena have been romantically linked since June 2023, although they only went public around December that year. Before they were a couple, the duo had already collaborated professionally — from Selena’s 2015 single ‘Kill ‘Em with Kindness’, to ‘Trust Nobody’ in 2017, and the music video for Benny’s ‘I Can’t Get Enough’. In December 2024, the pair confirmed their engagement.
As for wedding bells, the couple haven’t kicked off wedding planning, but Benny has promised it’ll be very “chill” when the time comes.
