A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland late Wednesday, marking the seventh eruption since December, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO).
The eruption occurred at the Sundhnuksgigar volcanic fissure near the town of Grindavik. Live footage reveals lava flowing from a fissure.
“No infrastructure was currently threatened, but Grindavik — a small fishing town — was being evacuated,” IMO specialist Benedikt Ofeigsson told public radio RAS2.
The eruption follows a period of heightened seismic activity in the region. Iceland has 33 active volcanoes.
