Even two years after its award-winning international debut, the acclaimed Marathi film Ghaath continues to receive recognition. At the recently held Filmfare Marathi Awards, the crime thriller earned four major honours, including Best Film (Critics), Best Actor (Critics), Best Story, and Best Editing.

The sensational award sweep came after the Chhatrapal Ninawe directorial was nominated across a whopping 11 categories at the prestigious ceremony. The film, set amidst the Maoist-infested jungles, explores the complex dynamics between rebels, civilians, and law enforcement. Produced by Shiladitya Bora (Platoon One Films), Ghaath stars Jitendra Joshi, Milind Shinde, Janardan Kadam, and Suruchi Adarkar among others.

Jitendra Joshi, who received the Best Actor (Critics) award, attributed the film’s success to the dedication of the entire team. He acknowledged that bringing the project to life was not easy, but praised the committed collaborators who made sure it was completed, released, and appreciated by audiences.

“First of all, when a writer-director is making his or her first film, after putting in so much effort to write it, to take it to a producer, and then finally to make it… and when you’re offered a central part in that film — where there are three stories and three protagonists, or you could even say antagonists — just being chosen to play one of those roles is, in itself, an award. I’m very happy that Chhatrapal won Best Story, Editing and Film. Of course, I feel it would have been great if the film had received more appreciation in theatres. But there are some films that are recognised later — slowly, over time. This is one of those films that will stay with the audience for a long time. And I’m just very happy to be a part of it,” the actor said.

Bora said the team is incredibly proud of the film and recalled how, when Ghaath premiered at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival in 2023, they had back-to-back sold-out shows.

“However, when the film was theatrically released in India, it did not perform as expected. The film is currently available on Prime Video and I hope this win will act as a booster and help us reach a wider audience.”

Chhatrapal Ninawe dedicated the awards to his father—who was battling dementia when he began writing Ghaath and passed away shortly after its release.

The director noted that the wins, after a long journey to bring the film to audiences, “validate the importance of telling stories from the hinterlands.” The filmmaker added, “These awards belong to everyone who believed in the film when it seemed impossible.”

Also starring Dhananjay Mandaokar and Amit Shende, Ghaath garnered international acclaim when it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, where Ninawe won the Giuseppe Becce Award for Best Director. The film had a theatrical release in India in September last year.
