Popular singer and music composer Amaal Mallik, best known for songs like Besabriyan, Jab Tak, and Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon, dropped a bombshell in March 2025 when he announced that he had severed all ties with his parents and family. This information came as a shock to his fans, and discussions have since been making rounds about what could have led to this decision, with many worrying about Amaal’s bond with his brother, Armaan Malik. While Armaan had previously confirmed that the brothers are going strong, Amaal has now shared his side of the story.
Amaal Mallik opens up on why he broke ties with his family
Amaal Mallik, who had earlier revealed his battle with clinical depression, recently opened up about the emotional strain caused by his family dynamics. In a heartfelt chat with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal shared that despite winning awards and accolades, he constantly struggled to meet his family’s expectations. Amaal shared:
“When directors complained (to Dad) that I wasn’t taking up their projects, I’d explain I had said no for a reason. But my parents began feeling the pressure too. Dad would say, ‘Just meet the director, don’t say anything, just finish it.’ And I’d be like, ‘Why are they calling you when I haven’t done anything?’ That’s when things started going south, differences of opinion began building up.”
Amaal Mallik was constantly compared with his brother, Armaan
Aside from creative differences, Amaal Mallik shared that he often struggled to connect with his mother, a corporate lawyer, who wanted him to be more organised and frequently compared his journey to that of his brother, Armaan Malik. Amaal said she never understood their differences in personality and career paths, which left him feeling overwhelmed. In Amaal’s words:
“There was an issue with my mom. She couldn’t understand me. She comes from a corporate lawyer background. I, on the other hand, was living as a disorganised, undisciplined, raw, rebellious artist. She wanted me to bring structure into my life, and I agreed, but I couldn’t follow through. She would compare my journey with Armaan’s, and that would affect her. But no two people walk the same path. Armaan and I are completely different—we do different kinds of music, different interviews, and we have different personalities. Still, the expectations kept building.”
When did Amaal decide to draw the line?
Amaal Mallik revealed that the constant pressure to meet his parents’ expectations and the scrutiny from people around him eventually took a toll on his mental health. Despite winning awards and achieving success, he felt it was never enough. The overwhelming questions and comparisons led him to set boundaries between his personal and professional life, firmly asking others not to interfere with his peace of mind. The music composer noted:
“Mom’s expectations, Dad’s expectations, the pressure of awards, it all mattered to me because it mattered to them. Then everyone started asking questions, ‘Why didn’t this happen? Why didn’t you do that project? When will you do this?’ It reached a point where I had to say, ‘Let me draw a line between my personal and professional life. Don’t mess with my head.’”
Despite the differences with other members of the family, the brotherly bond between Amaal and his brother Armaan remains strong. Ending the gossip around a potential rift, Armaan had earlier confirmed that their bond would remain the same.
