Ekta Kapoor, often referred to as the ‘Queen’ of Indian television, launched her first series of K-shows 25 years ago. The producer-director soon rose to prominence for her shows, including Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. However, her saas-bahu serials became culture-defining content over the next decade, to the extent that they still continue to influence the Indian television space. And, now she has decided to revive her most popular show, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, and shared why she made the decision to do so after decades.
Ekta Kapoor revealed why she decided to bring back Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
Ekta Kapoor took to her Instagram handle and shared a long post on July 10, 2025. In the post, she explained what led to her decision to revive Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The director-producer revealed that when the 25th anniversary of the show approached, she shared the idea of relaunching the show. However, her first reaction was a ‘firm NO’. She didn’t want to shake the nostalgia, and she knew nothing could replace it.
She also didn’t want to shake the legacy the show had built. Ekta Kapoor shared how, between 2000 and 2005, women began participating in family discussions for the first time, a shift deeply influenced by Indian television, especially Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki. She added:
“Additionally, the television landscape has evolved. Once dependent on 9 cities, audiences now consume content in fragments, scattered across platforms. Would this shake the legacy of Kyunki, the iconic TRP that no one has ever achieved before or after? But was that truly the legacy of the show? Was it just a show with high numbers? Research carried out by an international body once concluded that the show gave a voice to women in Indian homes.”
Ekta Kapoor recalled Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as a change starter
Ekta Kapoor, in the same post, revealed that Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi was a global ambassador, carrying forward India’s storytelling traditions worldwide. She shared how the show was not just an ordinary daily soap, but it started conversations about domestic r*pe, marital r*pe, age shaming and euthanasia at the dining tables of Indian homes. However, in their minds, the abrupt ending of the show haunted them, so Ekta thought of creating something that would tell impactful stories rather than focusing on the TRP. Ekta added:
“Can we reclaim the power to reach millions to actually change mindsets and thoughts? Can we discuss parenting? The balance between concern and control? Can we discuss issues that we often shy away from today? Can we utilise the most beloved and integrated platform in India, Television, to tell a story that resonates and educates, while also providing equal amounts of entertainment? Can we bring back the time when a family sat at a dinner table and had conversations? The moment I asked this to myself, I got the answer, with a smile on my face.”

Ekta Kapoor decided to bring back Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as an impactful series
Ekta Kapoor revealed that it was the impact that made her want to bring back the serial. She shared that she decided to revive the daily soap so that it could raise important questions, spark conversations, and stand out in a time dominated by visual gimmicks. She concluded the post by confirming that Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi was most definitely coming back. However, with limited episodes, to create an impact, probe thoughts, and most importantly, to inspire. She added:
“Here’s to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, for what it stands for: giving a voice, bringing a much-awaited change, for its history, and for what it holds in store for us. Of course, without sounding preachy, but by being relatable and inclusive. Cheers to Kyunki, cheers to the power of storytelling, cheers to less of what happened before and cheers to what will come! We will never win against nostalgia. The fight, though, is not about winning. It is about Impact! To show that’s not just ours, but also yours too!”
