Lewis Hamilton has said that he wouldn’t mind seeing Max Verstappen make the switch from Red Bull to join Mercedes next season. The speculation around Verstappen leaving Red Bull has intensified, especially after the Austrian Grand Prix. Mercedes driver George Russell confirmed during a media interaction that there had been some conversations between the Mercedes management and the Dutchman.

Although Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, the deal reportedly includes a clause allowing him to exit early if the team fails to provide a championship-winning car, a situation that seems relevant this season as he slips out of title contention. After finishing fourth at the British Grand Prix, seven-time world champion and Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton was asked whether he would support the idea of Verstappen joining his former team, Mercedes. Speaking to Sky Sports, Hamilton said he would recommend the move.

“Of course (I would recommend Mercedes),” Hamilton said.

When asked about the controversial 2021 season finale, Hamilton made it clear he holds no grudge against Verstappen.

“Max didn’t do anything. He did what he needed to do in terms of winning, so I don’t think it would be a problem.”

Hamilton also reflected on his past loyalty to Mercedes, recalling a time he dismissed Red Bull as “just a drinks company.” He admitted he regrets saying that and now fully recognises Red Bull’s achievements.

“He’s coming from a great team. Many, many years ago I was being asked something about I think I was just so diehard Mercedes at the time, and I remember saying something about Red Bull being only a drinks company,” said Hamilton.

“And I’ve always regretted it The truth is, Red Bull has been an incredible team. There are so many people there who are exceptional. They’ve dominated for years.”

Despite his move to Ferrari, Hamilton continued to praise Mercedes and recommended them as a team to join.

“If anyone was going to ask me about Mercedes, it’s an amazing team with passion, great personnel, a great factory, a great environment to work in So, of course I would (recommend it),” said Hamilton.

Hamilton concluded by saying Verstappen is a fierce competitor, regardless of which car he drives.

“Max in any car is a strong opponent. I don’t really think too much about it,” said Hamilton.

The exit of Christian Horner from Red Bull is expected to intensify the chatter around Verstappen’s future with the team in the coming days.
