NEW DELHI: The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday dismissed claims made by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha regarding a supposedly cancelled meeting about Bihar’s special intensive revision of electoral rolls.Jha cited an EC letter that allegedly confirmed a meeting scheduled for July 10. He questioned the Commission’s apparent refusal to meet after initially agreeing to the appointment. In a post on X Jha wrote, “Dear EC ji, is this not your own letter? When we pointed out the time after noon on July 10, your people, after initially agreeing, are now refusing to meet.”“I, a humble citizen, urge you not to act at the behest of any political party but to fulfil your duty under Section 324. Will you do so?” he added. The EC promptly responded, labeling Jha’s claims as misleading. The Commission clarified that it had received no communication from either RJD President Lalu Yadav or his authorized representative, Tejashwi Yadav. According to the EC, Jha’s authorisation from the party was limited to attending the July 2 meeting only, as per RJD’s letter dated April 3.Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav led a ‘Mahagathbandhan’ protest against the EC’s special intensive revision of electoral rolls. The opposition has alleged that the Election Commission, through its revision drive, is snatching voting rights from migrants, Dalits, Mahadalits, and poor voters, calling the campaign a “conspiracy to block votes” ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, which are due in three months.RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed that the poll body has lost its credibility and has become a “wing of a political party.”“The Election Commission has become a wing of a political party. Will two people from Gujarat decide which Bihari voter can vote and which cannot?” Tejashwi asked. “The Election Commission has lost its credibility. Preparations are underway on a large scale to remove the names of poor people from the voter list. First, their names are being deleted, and then their pensions and rations will also be taken away,” he added.
