Muzaffarnagar police have arrested a man accused of impersonating a police constable and luring women into relationships. The accused, identified as Naushad Tyagi, allegedly went by the name Rahul Tyagi and had been targeting women across several states for the past three years.
According to police, Tyagi wore a fake police uniform and posed as a constable to win the trust of unsuspecting women — many of them widows or those living away from their husbands. Investigators say he formed relationships with at least 18 to 20 women, and admitted to sexually exploiting 10 of them.
Tyagi’s connections reportedly spanned across Delhi, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Mathura, Sambhal, Muzaffarnagar, and even parts of Assam and Meghalaya. He had passed Class 10 and had no legitimate ties to any police department.
Muzaffarnagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar Verma said the accused had been using the uniform for years and had even built casual ties with some real police personnel, occasionally sharing meals with them. However, he never disclosed his true identity to them.
“He specifically targeted women who were alone — either widowed or separated from their husbands,” SSP Verma said. “A complaint from one such woman recently came to light at the Nagar Kotwali police station, following which an investigation was launched.”
The investigation led to Tyagi’s arrest. Police recovered a fake uniform from his possession and registered a case under Sections 319 (cheating by personation), 316 (criminal breach of trust), 318 (cheating) and 69 (sexual intercourse obtained through deceitful means) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He has since been sent to jail.
Officials said Tyagi claimed he got hold of a police uniform left behind by a friend, who was a real constable posted in Madhya Pradesh. The friend’s name was also Naushad, which the accused used to his advantage.
Police say they are withholding the names of the affected women to protect their privacy. Authorities are also probing if Tyagi had any accomplices or further victims.
