Former Maryland governor Larry Hogan has said that he will not be voting for either former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming US presidential election, in a statement on Sunday, as per CBS News. Speaking on ‘Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan’, a news progrram, Hogan, who served as governor from 2015 to 2023, expressed his concerns over the current American political scenario.
“Neither one of the two candidates has earned my vote, and the voters in the country are going to be able to make that decision,” Hogan said. Despite having Trump’s endorsement, he reiterated his intention not to support the former president, clarifying, “I didn’t vote for him in 2016 or 2020, and I’ve made that pretty clear.”
Hogan is currently vying for an open seat in the US Senate, where he faces off against Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks in a surprisingly competitive race within deep-blue Maryland. Known for his willingness to criticise Trump, Hogan has consistently set himself apart from mainstream Republican rhetoric.
“I have a completely separate identity after, you know, being governor for two terms in the bluest state, or one of the blue states in America,” he said. “I stand up to him, probably more than just about anyone, and I’ll continue to.”
Hogan condemned Trump’s “divisive rhetoric,” raising concerns over the “toxic and divisive politics” that he believes have infected both Democratic and Republican parties. “I’m very concerned, and I believe both parties are way off track from what their kind of base core values used to be,” he said, arguing that the Democratic Party has shifted too far left while the GOP has morphed into “more of a Trump party.”
Although Hogan has received Trump’s endorsement, he showed little interest in sharing the stage with the former president during campaign events. When asked if he would campaign with Trump or even attend a Baltimore Orioles game with him, Hogan simply replied, “I don’t think I will.” However, he added, “He’s not going to really be campaigning in Maryland. But he should go watch a game sometime, yeah — sure.”
