Bollywood actor, Aamir Khan’s love story with his first wife, Reena Dutta, was no less than a movie. Both fell in love during their teenage years, had a lot of complications as well as drama as they had a secret love marriage. Aamir and Reena were neighbours who had fallen in love, used to stay next to each other’s homes. However, do you know when Aamir and Reena got married, her family cut off all the ties with her?
Aamir Khan reveals that Reena Dutta’s parents cut off ties with her after their secret wedding
When Reena’s parents came to know that she was having a secret affair with Aamir, they promised never to see her face. Both of them, to secure their relationship, had a secret marriage as they did not want to lose each other. However, when Reena’s parents came to know about their wedding, a huge storm came into their lives as Reena’s family cut off contact with her. Aamir, who sat down for an interview with the Screen, shared:
“Reena’s mother denied her from coming home. She spoke to her and said, ‘You don’t come here. We don’t want to meet you.’ This left Reena shattered. ‘You are married now. You must be happy. We don’t want to meet you.”
However, Aamir then shared that it took four months for things to cool down. Reena’s mom once in the absence of her dad, shared that him having a heart attack. He was rushed to the hospital, where Aamir had come with Reena in the ICU to see her dad. The actor shared that his ex-wife was very close to her father, and all of them got emotional at the hospital. The 3 Idiots star, Aamir, touched the feet of his father-in-law, who did not react but nodded.

Aamir and Reena, back in 1986, had a secret wedding ceremony when he was in the early days of his career. The actor had also read the Special Marriage Act to understand whether what he and Reena had planned to do was correct or not. Aamir shared of not yet been 21 when he had decided to get married, and when in April he became of the legal age of marriage, on April 18, 1986, he and Reena were legally married. The first person to know from Reena’s family about her marriage was her sister Anu. Aamir shared:
“We got married on April 18, two days after I turned 21. Those two days we waited because it was a weekend. We got married and went to our respective houses. Reena ended up revealing about our marriage to her sister Anu. She was shocked. Her parents didn’t react too well. Now that Reena’s parents knew this, I thought it was time my parents knew it too. I called her to meet my parents. I assembled all my family members to break the news. My parents thought she was my girlfriend. They were blushing.”
Aamir also shared that his dad was a dynamite as he was short-tempered. However, once he told his dad about his and Reena’s love story, all the ladies of his home had tears in their eyes. Aamir was surprised to see that he got a hug from his father, who had blessed the ex-pair.
