A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck central Pakistan on Sunday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). However, no reports of casualties or damage have emerged so far.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported that the epicentre was situated approximately 149 kilometres (92.5 miles) west of Multan. GFZ noted that the quake was shallow, occurring at a depth of just 10 kilometres (6.2 miles).

The Pakistan earthquake comes a day after a 4.3 magnitude quake struck neighbouring Afghanistan on Saturday night, with its epicentre at a depth of 120 kilometres.

The latest magnitude 5.5 earthquake in central Pakistan is the most recent in a series of seismic events affecting the region. Earlier in July, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck Pakistan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The tremor occurred at 8:02 PM IST on June 12, 2025, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was located at latitude 27.18N and longitude 64.96E.

Peshawar residents also felt tremors from a magnitude 4.7 earthquake originating in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region at a depth of 211 kilometres, Geo News reported. No damage or casualties were reported in either event.

Shallow earthquakes are often more hazardous than deeper ones because their seismic waves reach the surface more quickly, leading to stronger ground shaking and an increased risk of damage and casualties.
