A Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was shot and injured in Murshidabad on Tuesday night, even as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is on a three-day visit to the district. Police have arrested the two accused, Rajesh SK and Bobin SK, in connection with the firing. A firearm and ammunition were recovered from them, according to police sources.

The victim, identified as Mawla Baksh Mandal, sustained a bullet injury to his left hand after two rounds were allegedly fired at him by three miscreants near his house in Hariharpara. He was initially taken to the Hariharpara Block Primary Health Centre and later referred to Murshidabad Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

The incident occurred while the chief minister was staying at the Baharampur Circuit House. Earlier in the day, she had visited violence-hit areas and addressed a public meeting in Suti, amid tight security arrangements across the district.

According to Mandal, the attack stemmed from an old enmity. He has named two local Congress leaders, Rajesh Sk and Bobin Sk, as the alleged attackers. “I was sitting next to my house, suddenly three people came and fired at me. Two rounds of bullets were fired. One bullet hit my left hand,” Mandal said.

The firing incident triggered tension in the area. Police from Hariharpara police station reached the spot and brought the situation under control. A probe was launched into the matter.
