Kajol’s debut film, Bekhudi, was announced in 1990. This places the superstar actress’ career as of now at a full 35 years. It is another matter that the powerhouse actress barely looks 35!
From Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham to Salaam Venky: Maa’s Appeal! Kajol’s on-screen trysts with motherhood
But for all that, this versatile Diva, who has always made bold choices, has played a mother in multiple films right from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… when she was only about a decade old in cinema. Her latest such enterprise is Maa, obviously in the title-role, in which she becomes a kind of incarnation of Goddess Kali to protect her daughter from the devil.
Here’s taking a journey down her lane of Maa’s Appeal!
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001)
Kajol was the indulgent yet disciplinarian mom to her son, and is uber-proud when the kid recites ‘Jana gana mana’ at a school function in London.
U Me Aur Hum (2008)
Kajol’s character develops Alzheimer’s Disease, and her loving husband even has to look after their infant son, and protect him from unintentional harm from his mother. And so Piya, her character, is institutionalized.
Toonpur Ka Superrhero (2010)
In this unique home production that was a live action film mixed with animation, Priya (played by Kajol) is the wife of a famous actor, Aditya Kumar (Ajay Devgn), who is called a ‘fake’ hero by his son as the action in his movies is done by ‘doubles’. Aditya tells his son that the cartoons he watches are fake, but one day, he is kidnapped by them! In this zany comic book-like adventure, Priya too comes in and saves their daughter as well as the ’noble’ cartoons with her ingenuity, even as Ajay saves their son.
Helicopter Eela (2018)
A “helicopter parent” is like an overprotective interfering drone over his or her kid, infiltrating the latter’s privacy and overstretching parental limits. As Eela, Kajol played one such (single) parent. She even joins the same college as Vivan to complete her studies! In a twist, the son himself helps the mother rediscover her singing talent, which she had abandoned because of circumstances.
Going further, Kajol had no qualms about playing mother even to a 20-something (Mithila Parkar)! This story of complex relationships and secrets kept along with unresolved conflicts saw the actress again as a single parent, who is not on the same page as her offspring.
Salaam Venky (2022)
Kajol played a fiercely determined single mother (again!) to a son (Vishal Jethwa), who is suffering from an eventually fatal disease Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The son is determined to fight for euthanasia, so that he can donate his organs.
The Trial (2023)
The law graduate who had turned housewife, returns to her profession when her ex-husband is arrested for a sex scandal, battling not just society but also balancing work and family in the shape of two innocent daughters who also face dad’s stigma.
Tailpiece
In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Rani Mukerji’s young daughter, named Anjali, searches for Kajol’s character on her dead mother’s instructions, so that the latter can marry her father (Shah Rukh Khan), who both women had loved in college. When Anjali succeeds, Kajol becomes her ‘mother’ in the end! The film released as early as 1998.
