Actors Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan both made their acting debuts in the year 2000, marking the beginning of two contrasting journeys in the industry. Hrithik entered the spotlight with Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, a romantic action film directed by his father Rakesh Roshan, which became a massive box-office success and established him as a national sensation overnight. In contrast, Abhishek Bachchan made his debut with J.P. Dutta’s Refugee, opposite Kareena Kapoor, which, despite introducing two star kids, underperformed commercially and received a lukewarm response.
Abhishek Bachchan reflects on comparisons with Hrithik Roshan during their debuts: “There’s never been any animosity toward any of my colleagues”
In a recent interview with The Times of India, Abhishek Bachchan addressed whether he ever felt insecure being compared to Hrithik Roshan following their simultaneous Bollywood debuts.
Acknowledging that the comparisons stemmed from them entering the industry at the same time, Abhishek said, “But no, as a newcomer, I was never ever insecure. I never thought of it like that because I never looked upon anybody as my competition, and I don’t mean that arrogantly. I mean it from a sense of, I can’t do what you do, and you can’t do what I do, because this is me physically. You can’t compare artists somewhere, I feel that goes against artistry. See, who you prefer is different. That’s your choice. I’ll give you an example from art.”
Abhishek explained that comparisons in creative fields are often unfair, using Indian art as an example. He cited his admiration for painters Subhash Awchat and Paresh Maity, noting that while one may prefer one over the other, declaring who is “better” overlooks the uniqueness of their work. He believes the same perspective should be applied to actors.
Abhishek recalled a moment during the shoot of Sarkar when he wanted to attend an award show for his Yuva nomination. Director Ram Gopal Varma advised him against it, explaining that award shows often lack fairness, as they compare performances in entirely different roles.
Abhishek also spoke highly of Hrithik Roshan, saying, “Hrithik is a great actor and a friend. I’m genuinely immensely happy for all that he’s achieved and continues to achieve. But more than that, I love the person that he is. And so there’s never been any animosity toward any of my colleagues. I genuinely want them to do well. I want my colleagues and my co-stars to be so good. Because that is a constant inspiration for me. It makes you aspire to, ‘Oh, that person is doing such a good job. I should also work hard’.”
Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan have built successful careers in Bollywood. Abhishek’s next film, Kaalidhar Laapata, releases on ZEE5 on July 4, while Hrithik stars in War 2, set to hit theatres on August 14 alongside Rajinikanth’s Coolie.
