Benfica took the spotlight after their win over Bayern Munich in the FIFA Club World Cup fixture held at Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, June 25. Andreas Schjelderup, the Norwegian winger for the Portuguese club, scored the only goal to beat the German giants. The goal came in the 13th minute of the match, when full-back Fredrik Aursnes put in a cross from the right side, which the winger managed to come in and find the back of the net.

Bayern had put up a second-string side after they had already secured their position in the next stage of the tournament. The side clearly struggled to compete in the first half as they failed to have a shot on goal. Joshua Kimmich thought he had given his side the equaliser, but the striker, Harry Kane, was caught in an offside position during the hour mark.

Speaking on the performance, head coach Vincent Kompany had suspicions that his side would struggle to perform, considering the heat and the pitch that was used.

“I think our first half wasn’t good at all. With the pitch and the heat, I just feared this wouldn’t go as fluid as normal,” Kompany commented.

“It’s football. If you have chances and don’t take them, you pay the price… (against Flamengo) it’s going to be a tough game. We know we can create chances,” he added.

Munich will look to make the most out of their five-day break as they are set to take on the Brazilian side, Flamengo, for the round of 16 clash in Miami. Meanwhile, Benfica, who have also secured qualification, will be up against Chelsea.

LIAM DELAP OPENS ACCOUNT FOR CHELSEA

Chelsea’s latest signing, Liam Delap, scored his first goal for the club. The London-based club went on to pick up a dominant 3-0 win over the Tunisian club ES Tunis.

Enzo Fernandez was on song for the club as his set-piece provided the first goal, as Tosin Adarabioyo provided the finish during stoppage time in the first half. Delap went on to double the lead just a few minutes later, thanks to another assist by Fernandez.

The Tunisian club hardly created any chances, ending the game without a single shot on goal. In the final minutes of the game, Tyrique George provided the third goal as they went on to register a dominant victory.
