Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and Israel and called for closer cooperation with the United States to resolve ongoing global conflicts, including the war in Gaza and the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
During a meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit late Tuesday, Erdogan praised the role played by Washington in brokering the truce.
According to a statement from the Turkish presidency, Erdogan “expressed his satisfaction with the ceasefire achieved between Israel and Iran through President Trump’s efforts, hoping it would be permanent.” He hoped the agreement would lead to a permanent peace.
The ceasefire follows 11 days of escalating hostilities, which peaked when the US joined Israeli strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday. Iran responded with a retaliatory missile strike on a US base in Qatar late Monday, a move seen as bringing the confrontation to a close.
Erdogan also urged stronger cooperation between Turkey and the United States to help end the war in Ukraine and to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “Close dialogue is essential to resolve both the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the tragedy unfolding in Gaza,” he said.
In addition, Erdogan pushed for deeper collaboration in the defense sector, suggesting it could unlock major economic benefits. “Advancing cooperation in the defense industry would facilitate achieving the goal of a USD 100 billion trade volume,” he noted.
The meeting underscored Turkey’s desire to position itself as a key diplomatic player amid multiple global crises while strengthening its strategic ties with Washington.
