In an exchange of fire near a mosque in Tulkarm, Israeli troops killed Muhhamad Jabber, also known as Abu Shujaa, a local commander of the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad movement in the West Bank, along with four other militants.
The military stated that Jabber was the head of a network of fighters in the nearby Nur Shams refugee camp. This gunbattle was part of one of the largest assaults in the Israeli territory in recent months.
Islamic Jihad’s armed wing in Tulkarm confirmed Jabber’s death, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed over the past two days to 17.
They also reported that fighters had engaged Israeli forces near the Abu Ubaida mosque.
The operation, which began early Wednesday morning, involved hundreds of Israeli troops supported by helicopters, drones, and armoured personnel carriers, raiding the cities of Tulkarm, Jenin, and areas in the Jordan Valley.
During the operation, a complete network outage occurred at Jawwal, one of the two main telecommunications companies in the Palestinian territories of Gaza and the West Bank, reported news agency Reuters.
Israel on Wednesday launched an extensive military operation in the occupied West Bank, where nine militants were killed with at least seven killed in aerial attacks, in the operation, the Israeli military said.
The Palestinian health ministry reported 11 fatalities in the West Bank, where violence has escalated during the nearly 11-month-long Gaza war, which began with Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7.
According to the Red Crescent, the Palestinian health authority reported that Israeli forces killed 11 people and injured 24 during the raids. Younes al-Khatib, the organization’s West Bank chief, said that ambulances were targeted by Israeli fire, and “one of our staffers was hit,” news agency AFP reported.
