Such deeds by her not only sparked a controversy but also enraged people, who accused Tommy of being insensitive to religious sentiment. Who is Tommy Genesis? Indian-origin rapper who sparked controversy with her music video, True Blue

Born as Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, Tommy Genesis is a Canadian rapper. She was born in Vancouver, Canada, in 1990. Tommy Genesis has studied film and sculpture at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Before she started her career in music, Tommy used to do art shows and take up art projects. Later, her interest in music picked up. It was in 2013 when she started rapping on an album, G3NESIS. After two years, Tommy Genesis grabbed the attention for her raw aesthetics in her 2015 mixtape, World Vision, which was released via Atlanta’s Awful Records. Tommy went on to release a self-titled studio album, Tommy Genesis, in 2018, followed by Goldilocks X in 2021, and both of them brought Tommy into the limelight.

Tommy Genesis had carved a niche for herself with her experimental ventures in music, which showcase hip-hop style, a blend of trap, and industrial beats. As per the reports, for her songs being ‘unapologetically intimate’, she received the title of ‘Fetish rapper’. Apart from music, Tommy also tried her hand in the fashion industry, and worked as a model for Calvin Klein’s Fall 2016 campaign, which was collaborated with M.I.A. at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. She also worked with Charlie Heat, rapper Father, Abra, JPEGMAFIA, and Charli XCX.

Tommy Genesis’ music video, True Blue sparked an outrage

Tommy Genesis grabbed attention with her portrayal of a Hindu deity in her video, True Blue. In the clip, she was seen as ‘Kali’, donning gold jewels and a red bindi. What didn’t go well with the viewers was that she was seen smoking in the clip, being in her character, and she also used the Cross as a prop, with which she was seen doing some questionable gestures, like licking it. However, this instantly enraged people who slammed Tommy for being insensitive towards religious sentiments.

While the video is still accessible on YouTube, as reports claimed, it was taken down from all social media handles, but the controversy has already erupted. It was Raftaar who took to his social media handle and openly bashed Tommy. He labelled the video as offensive and requested people to report the same on YouTube. In a note, he said that this is a mockery of religion, and this shouldn’t exist.
