An Indian investor faced a frustrating visa episode when the Austrian embassy first rejected and then approved his Schengen visa after he appealed via a detailed email. The individual had clearly mentioned in his cover letter that the purpose of the visit was to understand real estate investment opportunities. Despite this, the embassy claimed the applicant had failed to “prove the purpose of the trip.”

A DETAILED EMAIL THA TURNED THINGS AROUND
Rather than giving up, the applicant chose to write a point-by-point email addressing every concern mentioned in the rejection. He explained that the purpose of his trip was not just sightseeing, but also to explore property investments in Vienna and Prague.
Interestingly, he also highlighted that he had attached a letter from a Vienna-based real estate company, a booking of a consultation session, and financial documents backing up his travel and investment plan. His email was thorough, polite, and factual.
To his surprise, within two days, the Austrian embassy responded positively. They accepted the appeal and reversed the visa decision. They replied to my email and said my visa had now been approved. “I could collect the stamped passport the next day,” he shared.
BUT WAS IT MISCOMMUNICATION OR MISREADING?
This incident isn’t isolated. Many Indian travellers applying for Schengen visas often face similar problems where embassies reject applications for vague reasons, such as ‘unclear purpose’ or ‘insufficient documents’, even when the applicants believe they’ve submitted everything required.
It also shows that sometimes embassies may miss or misunderstand submitted documents. In such cases, a follow-up or appeal can go a long way.
