Union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumder sparked a controversy after comparing West Bengal’s law and order with the “sex workers of Sonagachi”, the Trinamool Congress has claimed. The ruling party has demanded an apology from Majumder for his remarks.

In a video shared on the Trinamool Congress’s official X handle, Majumder is heard saying, “You have turned the law and order into the sex workers of Sonagachi. This is the law of West Bengal.” India Today TV could not verify the authenticity of the video.

Trinamool Congress’s general secretary Kunal Ghosh slammed Majumder, saying his remarks were ugly. “He (Majumder) has been shouting and insulting the sex workers of Sonagachi. He has made distorted statements by comparing them politically, looking at them in poor light,” he said.

“Do you understand what sex workers of Sonagachi mean? Do you understand how much pain, tears, suffering and struggle they face? You need to apologise to these mothers and sisters. What right do you have to insult the mothers and sisters in that profession?” he said, adding that the Union Minister should apologise for his remarks.

Debangshu Bhattacharya, another Trinamool Congress leader, took a dig at the BJP, saying, “Hey, BJP. How black will the burnt face be? Anubrata (Mondal) is a crime, Sukanta is good?”

The remarks were made when Sukanta Majumder tried to meet an NRI doctor who had protested during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Kellogg College in the UK earlier this year. Majumder was also detained in Kolkata’s Bhowanipore on Friday.

“Dr Rajat’s house is located on 186C, Harish Mukherjee Road, adjoining the residence of Abhishek Banerjee. The doctor had asked the Chief Minister certain questions during her visit to Kellogg College. Since his return to Kolkata, some mafia-like doctors and people claiming to represent the West Bengal Medical Council have been harassing him,” Majumdar said after his detention.

However, there was no response from Majumdar or the BJP over the remarks made by the Union Minister in the viral video posted by the Trinamool Congress.
