An elevated highway in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur developed a lateral shift in its structure and all vehicular movement to Bengaluru has been temporarily suspended, police said on Saturday. A lateral shift on a highway refers to a horizontal displacement of the road’s centreline or the path of vehicles travelling on it.

The Hosur elevated expressway, situated on the national highway between Bengaluru to Chennai, was declared dangerous by officials after the issue was detected. Officials have closed the stretch for safety reasons and have stopped vehicles from using the flyover.

All movement of vehicles to Bengaluru was suspended and traffic jams stretching for three kilometres were witnessed at the Hosur bus stand due to restrictions.

Vehicles coming from Salem and Chennai to Hosur via Krishnagiri to reach Bengaluru cannot use the elevated flyover. For now, vehicles are allowed to use the service road running along the highway.

A team of experts will visit the Hosur elevated highway on Sunday to investigate the cause.

In Bengaluru, the Hosur flyover connects Silk Board Junction to the IT hub of Electronics City. It was constructed to alleviate traffic congestion on Hosur Road, a major artery connecting Bengaluru to the industrial town of Hosur.
