Tropical Storm Gilma has intensified in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is gaining strength as it churns far from land and offers a sense of relief for those living along the coast.
As of Monday night, no coastal watches or warnings had been issued, allowing relief to the residents. The storm was located about 720 miles (1,158 kilometres) southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, making it out of reach of any immediate danger.
Gilma, which reached tropical storm status on Sunday, is showing signs of getting even stronger. The National Hurricane Center has warned that it could approach hurricane strength by the middle of the week. This development is being closely monitored by forecasters.
With maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (96 kph) and a westward movement at around 10 mph (16 kph), the storm is on a steady path of growth. Forecasters predict that Gilma will gradually gain strength over the next few days, continuing its journey across the ocean.
While Gilma stirs in the Pacific, Hurricane Ernesto is making waves in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Its powerful swells are causing dangerous rip currents along the US East Coast, leading to numerous rescues.
