Twelve years ago, Raanjhanaa brought a fresh voice to love stories in Indian cinema. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Benaras, the film struck a chord with audiences and has since remained a memorable part of its genre. As we mark 12 years of Raanjhanaa, it’s a fitting time to revisit some of the moments that stood out—one of them unfolding quietly but powerfully on the ghats of the Ganga, shaped by emotion, spontaneity, and a bit of serendipity.

12 Years of Raanjhanaa: Aanand L Rai recalls the scene that was never in the script; says, “The emotion was always a part of the script, but the visual was not”

Director Aanand L Rai, known for blending the ordinary with the profound, recently shared the story behind one of the most poignant moments in the film, when the grown-up Kundan comes face to face with his younger self. A moment that wasn’t always in the script, but became a visual cornerstone of the film’s deeply emotional climax.

“The emotion was always a part of the script, but the visual was not. That day, Himanshu and I were fighting. I hadn’t received the climax part of the movie, and it was our last day of shooting in Benaras. Himanshu is usually confident that he’ll give me the scene the next day, but when I went to him the next day, he still hadn’t written it. I told him, ‘I’m not leaving Benaras until I shoot this scene.”

“After an hour or two, Himanshu came to me at the Ganga Ghat where I was shooting and narrated the scene. When I heard it, I was so overcome with emotion—our tea was sitting there getting cold—and I just got up and left. I told everyone to take a break from that day’s schedule. That was the moment those lines he wrote gave me the visual.”

That scene—poetic, melancholic, and quietly powerful—remains one of Raanjhanaa’s most memorable moments. It also reflects the creative synergy between director Aanand L Rai, writer Himanshu Sharma, and the film’s lead, Dhanush.

Produced by Colour Yellow Productions, Raanjhanaa became more than just a love story. It was a film about obsession, longing, and sacrifice, held together by music, magic, and masterful storytelling. From Irshad Kamil’s piercing lyrics to A.R. Rahman’s unforgettable score, every beat of Raanjhanaa still finds rhythm in the hearts of fans even today.

As the film turns 12, what remains is not just nostalgia, but a feeling of how cinema, when born from raw honesty and creative passion, becomes timeless. And perhaps, that’s what Raanjhanaa always was, not a movie, but a memory we all return to, again and again.
